The prototype flute shown here is made from English hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) wood. The decorative rings, end cap and stopper holder are turned from buffalo horn. The sockets are reinforced with a wrap of carbon fiber and resin underneath the rings. The flute has a French-style tuning slide and partially lined head.
Although this is a very large flute, this choice of wood, ring material, and tuning slide design makes it feel quite light in the hand. I am still testing the long term durability of this prototye, while also exploring alternate materials and stylistic approaches.
