Firth, Son & Co (1-key, A)

Description: This small flute is in the key of A. It is made from boxwood, with a single brass key.

Makers marks: The head is marked “FIRTH, SON & Co / NEW YORK / A”. The left hand section of the body is marked “FIRTH, SON & Co / NEW YORK”. The right hand body section is marked “FIRTH, SON & Co / NEW YORK“. The foot is marked “FIRTH, SON & Co / NEW YORK“.

History: Firth, Son & Co operated in New York from 1863 to 1867. The company was a partnership of John Firth and his son Thaddeus, with some involvement of another son, Edward J. Firth. Tuning: This flute plays best in tune at A=420 hz with the head socket/tenon opened about 3 mm at 70 degrees F. 

Specifications: G# – B 179 mm. L2 tone hole 6 mm. R2 tone hole 6 mm.

Condition: This flute is in relatively good condition, aside from a cracked tenon between the left and right body sections that needs to be replaced, or reinforced, to be durable.
